Become a Pilot

Today's aviation world is full of potential. There is a near critical shortage of pilots around the world. If you have ever considered a career in aviation, now is the time. 

Sumter Aviation has partnered with King Schools for course materials and offers flight training programs for the following certificates and ratings in both manned and unmanned aircraft. 

Private Pilot

This is the first step towards your aviation goals.  Even if you do not want to pursue an aviation career, the Private Pilot certificate can open the doors to travel opportunities and adventures. It takes the average student about 50-60 hours of flight training to successfully complete the private pilot certificate.  To achieve this goal will require time, dedication and funds to pay for the costs. 

 

Minimum Requirements

- Be at least 17 years of age

- Be able to read, speak, and understand the English language

- Obtain at least a current third-class medical certificate or fly under the FAA's BasicMed program

- Receive a minimum of 40 hours of flight time including training and          solo flight

- Pass a knowledge test as well as the practical test

 
Estimated Cost $9500-15,000*

- Aircraft Rental - 40 hours

- Instructor (dual flight and Ground)

- Medical - $250

- FAA Written Exam - $150

- FAA Check Ride - $300-450

- King Schools Private Pilot Training Course - $365

*Additional costs are associated with this program and are all dependant on the individual student.

Commercial Pilot

The commercial Pilot Certificate is the minimum certificate to be paid or compensated to fly aircraft. It is the entry level to a career as a professional pilot. 

 

Requirements

- Be at least 18 years of age

- Be able to read, speak, and understand the English language

- Obtain at least a current third-class medical certificate for training and a second-class medical certificate for exercise of the commercial certificate.

- Have an instrument rating* (or be limited to day VFR 50 NM, no passengers)

- Accumulate at least 250 total hours of flight experience.

- Pass a knowledge test as well as the practical test

*Sumter Aviation does not currently offer the Instrument rating but will gladly connect you with an affiliated Instrument Instructor.

Part 107 Remote Pilot

To Operate your drone for anything other than personal recreational use, you must have a remote pilot certificate. The basic requirements are not that stringent as indicated below.

 

Requirements

- Be at least 16 years of age

- Be able to read, speak, and understand the English language

- Be in a mental and physical condition to fly a drone

- Pass a knowledge test

Sumter Aviation can help you prepare for the knowledge test and as a Certificated Flight Instructor, complete the required paperwork with the FAA to have your certificate issued.
